Proponents of passenger service on the old South Orient through Alpine hope that a renewed interest in using the rail line for freight will lead to a future travel boom, especially for tourism in Mexico.

It could be some time before that could happen, and it would require some major work on the railway itself to safely support the speed required by passenger trains.

Alpine Mayor Avinash Rangra told the city council last week the South Orient line, which runs from San Angelo to Presidio, will start service soon carrying pipes for the Trans Pecos Pipeline and other products.
