Long. Long. Short. Long.
The clattering of the wheels rotating quickly across the rail joints were only silenced by the blaring audible by the engineer pulling the horn as they approached the intersection at US 90 going into Dayton.
On either side of the intersection was strategically placed law enforcement, watching and waiting for residents to make the ill-advised decision to beat the train, run around the crossing arms or any other death-defying act.
Unfortunately, there were several who tried their luck, and it cost them a $130 fine. But that’s the scene Union Pacific officials and law enforcement members from the Dayton Police and the Texas Department of Public Safety want to paint. A reminder that it’s not worth it just for a few minutes, even seconds of a delay.
