Elon Musk said The Boring Company is working on a high-speed tunnel that could carry passengers between Austin and San Antonio in less than 30 minutes.

The proposed project would serve as a precursor to Musk’s long-discussed Hyperloop concept, with vehicles traveling at more than 200 mph (321.87 km/h), according to a post by the Tesla (TSLA) and SpaceX (SPCX) chief executive on X.
Musk said traffic congestion can stretch the roughly 80-mile trip between the two Texas cities to as long as 2.5 hours. The tunnel would provide a journey of under 30 minutes with more predictable travel times, he said.
The post didn't disclose the proposed route, construction cost, financing structure or expected completion date. Musk also didn't say whether the system would use conventional electric vehicles, specialized passenger pods or the low-pressure tubes originally envisioned for Hyperloop travel.

Test of tunneling economics

The project could become a significant demonstration of The Boring Company’s ability to extend its technology beyond relatively short urban loops. The privately held company operates an underground transportation system in Las Vegas and has promoted tunneling as a way to reduce congestion without acquiring large amounts of surface land.

A route between Austin and San Antonio would be considerably longer and faster than the company’s existing system. It also would likely require extensive regulatory approvals, safety testing and agreements governing land access.

For investors, the announcement may renew interest in transportation infrastructure linked to Musk’s companies, though The Boring Company is not publicly traded. A successful intercity tunnel could create opportunities for construction firms, engineering contractors and suppliers while raising new questions about competition with highways, airlines and planned passenger-rail projects.

Musk did not identify any government partners or indicate whether preliminary construction had begun. His announcement therefore represents an early proposal rather than a fully financed infrastructure project.
