Wabtec, formerly GE Transportation, celebrated the 1,000th locomotive produced at it's north Fort Worth plant this week. The locomotive will be delivered to Canadian National Railway (CN).
The Evolution Series Tier 4 was the first freight locomotive to meet the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Tier 4 emission standards, the company said. GE Transportation, which has since merged with Wabtec, made the decision to develop the locomotive in 2013. The locomotive has reduced emissions by more than 70 percent compared to the Tier 3 locomotive and has saved railroad customers more than $1.5 billion in infrastructure and operational costs, according to Wabtec.
The first Evolution Series Tier 4 locomotive was delivered to BNSF Railway, and the 1,000th was made for CN. It has been used by six Class 1 railroads and two mining companies in North America.
The company said the Evolution Series sets the standard for environmental performance in the freight-rail industry.
CN had announced in December 2017 that it would acquire 200 new locomotives over the next three years from GE Transportation that will be produced at the Fort Worth facility starting last year. The order included Tier 4 and Tier 3 Evolution Series locomotives and was described as the largest locomotive deal by any Class 1 railroad since 2014.
