To raise awareness about the new delays, LINK Houston organized a morning rush hour race on Thursday between pedestrians and the METRO Red Line across seven downtown blocks.

Light rail riders are experiencing delays along the Houston Metropolitan Transit Authority (METRO) Red Line after adjustments to the timing of traffic lights.

Since its launch in 2004, METRORail trains have used a system called traffic signal preemption to improve travel times and encourage ridership. As a train approaches a red light, the signal changes, allowing the train to pass through smoothly.

That is no longer the case for METRO's Red Line. Now, rather than receiving signal priority, trains must stop frequently at intersections to allow cars to pass in front.
