SAN MARCOS — Mayors representing four large cities along Interstate 35, including Ivy Taylor of San Antonio and Steve Adler of Austin, said Friday they all agree connecting the region with passenger rail service will be crucial in order to cope with the corridor’s rapid population increase.
The mayors, in San Marcos for an Austin-San Antonio Growth Summit, said they plan to meet again before year’s end to exclusively discuss transportation and to bring together the region’s two metropolitan planning organizations, which are responsible for funding and planning transportation infrastructure.
“I think people need to have options to travel throughout the corridor,” Taylor said. “Even though I do think it’s important for the state to continue to make investments in improving the (I-35) highway, I don’t know that ultimately it will have enough capacity for the growth that we’re seeing.”
