A ceremony next week will mark the start of groundbreaking on both sides of the Rio Grande for a new international railroad bridge between Laredo, Texas and Nuevo Laredo, Mexico. The formal groundbreaking will take place at 3 p.m. on October 31st.
The new Kansas City Southern Railway bridge, just south of Zaragoza Street on the east side of the tracks, will be constructed alongside the existing bridge over the Rio Grande. Estimated completion date is in 2025 and, when completed, will expedite trains through this corridor to relieve traffic congestion on both sides of the border.
The existing single-track bridge sees a steady stream of daily rail traffic and is the only rail link between the two cities at this important international border crossing corridor. The new span will further inhance border security and improve the movement of goods through the Laredo / Neuvo Laredo rail corridor.
A U.S. Presidential Permit was required was construction of the new single-track span bridge and that authority was granted in July 2020.
Since 2020, KCS has been in the project engineering and design phase as various construction permits were obtained in the U.S. and Mexico. This work is now complete, and moving into the construction phase.
