The cities of Borger in the Texas Panhandle and Gonzales in South Texas are moving forward to help short line railroads in their area improve safety and sustainability to serve local shippers.

In Borger, 31 miles of the Panhandle Northern Railroad (PNR) will be rehabbed by a contract crew, most of the work to be done will be in replacing ballast and railroad ties.  The PNR is a well used line that moves fertilizer, urea, farm products and industry by-products in and out between Borger and Panhandle, Texas. A federal grant was awarded to the city and once paperwork is completed the actual work will take between six to nine months to complete.

In the South Texas city of Gonzales, the city council has approved a $200,000 grant for Texas Gonzales Northern Railway (TXGN). The grant is to be used for rail improvements. TXGN will add 2,850 feet of track and roadbed for expansion to the existing right-of-way, located north of the U.S. 90A rail crossing.

Both short line railroads serve as the first-mile, last-mile and serve local industries to connect to Class 1 railroads in the national rail network.
