For 12 hours, residents in Liberty and Dayton might have noticed, there were no trains running parallel to US 90. The sound of the blaring horns was silenced, if only temporarily, long enough for Union Pacific officials and contractors to replace the aging Liberty Bridge crossover just before entering the city.
“Technically, this is a bridge replacement over the Trinity River,” said Jeff DeGraff, director of media relations.
DeGraff estimated 30-40 percent of the bridge structure to remain the same. Pieces of the bridge, like the steel trellises remained intact, but the main parts of the bridge were replaced with new and updated materials.
Prior to the launch of the $2.6 million project, DeGraff said the contractors, Russell Marine, LLC in Channelview, and the railroad staged all of the equipment and materials — some trucked in, others came by rail. The project would span some 530 feet across the historic bridge.
